Gouraud, Henri Joseph Etienne (1867–1946)

French general. He was born in Paris, France, and served in Morocco 1911–14. In World War I he was commander-in-chief of the French forces in the Dardanelles, and by 1919 he had become commander-in-chief of the army of the Levant. In 1919 he became French high commissioner to Syria.
