Goyen, Jan Josephszoon van

Goyen, Jan Josephszoon van (1596–1656)

Dutch landscape painter. He was active in Leiden, Haarlem, and from 1631 in The Hague. A pioneer of the realist style of landscape with Ruisdael, he sketched from nature and studied clouds and light effects.

He worked with Esaias van de Velde at Haarlem, after some study with other masters, and settled at The Hague. His art was creative in the development of Dutch landscape painting, gradually replacing the incidental interest of boats, figures and buildings in his river scenes with a larger concern with space, light and atmosphere conceived in what was virtually a warm monochrome. Rembrandt derived some inspiration from him.
