Gozo

Island in the Mediterranean Sea, 6 km/4 mi northwest of Malta; it is one of three main islands (with Malta and Comino) that form the state of Malta; area 67 sq m/26 sq mi; population (2005) 31,100 (with Comino). The chief town is Victoria. The island is very fertile, and products include fruit and vegetables. On Gozo are the megalithic ruins of Ggantija (the Giant's Temple, a citadel begun during the rule of the Arabs 870–1127), a baroque cathedral, and a modern Romanesque church.

Gozo has been identified with the Homeric island of Ogygia, where the mythological hero Ulysses was detained by the sea nymph Calypso.
