Gozzi, Gasparo (1713–1786)

Italian poet and essayist. His works are remarkable for their purity of language and elegance of diction. His Sermoni, written in the style of Horace, is his finest work in verse. Il mondo morale 1760 is an allegorical romance. His version of Lucan is remarkable, and his Difesa di Dante 1758 places him among the best commentators. He was the brother of Carlo Gozzi.

His reputation was enhanced by the publication of Osservatore veneziano 1761–62, a paper compiled in imitation of the English Spectator.
