Graetz, Heinrich (1817–1891)

German historian. He was born in Poznań, and went to Wrocław in 1842. He advocated freedom of thought, but did not see the necessity for freedom of ritual. He became famous by the publication of his history of the Jews (1853–74), which produced a greater sensation than any other Jewish book of the 19th century.
