Grümmer, Elisabeth (1911–1986)

German soprano. After three years as an actress she made her singing debut in 1941 as Octavian, in Aachen. She sang in many of the leading European opera houses, including an appearance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1951 as Eva. She sang at Bayreuth 1957–61, as Eva, Elsa, and Gutrune. Her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut was in 1967, as Elsa. She was especially well known for her singing of Mozart and Richard Strauss. Her best roles were Donna Elvira, Pamina, Ilia, the Countess in Capriccio and Figaro, and the Marschallin.
