Gracchus

In ancient Rome, two brothers who worked for agrarian reform. As tribune (magistrate) 133 BC, Tiberius tried to redistribute land away from the large slave-labour farms in order to benefit the poor as well as increase the number of those eligible for military service by providing them with the miniumum property requirement. He was murdered by a mob of senators. Gaius, tribune 123-122 BC, revived his brother's legislation, and introduced other reforms, but was outlawed by the Senate and killed in a riot.
