ZagrebIndustrial city (leather, linen, carpets, paper, and electrical goods) and capital of Croatia, on the Sava River; population (2001) 691,700. Zagreb was a Roman city (Aemona) and has a Gothic cathedral. Its university was founded in 1874. The city was damaged by bombing in October 1991 during the Croatian civil war.
