Grade, Michael

Grade, Michael (1943– )

English television executive. He was chair of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) 2004–06 and of ITV from 2007.

He started in sports journalism and worked for the family theatrical agency before moving to be deputy controller of the commercial station London Weekend Television in 1973. In 1984 he was appointed channel controller of BBC1, and two years later became the BBC's director of programmes. He went on to become the chief executive of Channel 4 1988–97.

Michael Grade is the nephew of film and television producer Lew Grade.
