Graf Spee, Admiral

    0.06 sec.

Graf Spee, Admiral

German pocket battleship of World War II. It sailed from Germany just before the outbreak of war and sank nine British merchant ships in the Atlantic. It was damaged in the Battle of the River Plate December 1939 and sailed into Montevideo, Uruguay, for repairs. Its captain, Langsdorff, fearful that the ship would be sunk as soon as it left the safety of the harbour, scuttled it 17 December 1939.
