Grafton, Richard (died 1572)

English chronicler and printer. He produced a modified version of Miles Coverdale's Bible in 1537, and in the following year went with Coverdale to Paris to print a revised version. However, the Inquisition pronounced the book heretical, and Grafton was forced to flee to England, where he completed his task in 1539, as the ‘Great Bible’ that Henry VIII ordered to be set up in churches. In 1544 Grafton obtained the monopoly for printing church service books, and at Edward VI's accession became king's printer.
