Gran Canaria

One of the chief Canary Islands, in the Spanish province of Las Palmas; capital Las Palmas; area 1,533 sq km/592 sq mi; population (2001 est) 728,400. It is fertile, of volcanic origin with deep valleys, and its peaks reach 1,980 m/6,495 ft.
