Granard

Market town in County Longford, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,013. The Motte of Granard, one of the largest in Ireland, was the site of the royal residence of Cairbe, son of the Gaelic chieftain Niall the Great. Granard hosts an annual Harp Festival (originating 1781, revived 1981) in the second week of August.

The motte was fortified by the Anglo-Normans. There is a statue of St Patrick in the centre of the motte, erected in 1932. The village of Abbeylara, 4 km/2 mi from Granard, has the remains of a 13th-century abbey and an earthwork said to be the site of a church founded by St Patrick in 460. Also nearby is a large earthwork known as Black Pig's Race, which stretches between Lough Kinale and Lough Gowna.
