Grand Falls

Town in central Newfoundland, Canada, on the Exploits River, 280 km/174 mi northwest of St John's; population (1991) 6,100. It is the site of large paper and pulp mills, and is a base for hunting and fishing. Grand Falls developed around a newspaper and pulp mill built in 1905. Power for industry is supplied by a large hydroelectric power station at Churchill Falls (formerly Grand Falls).
