Grand Island| Island in Lake Superior, off the north-central Upper Peninsula, Alger County, north Michigan; population (1990) 21. It is 5 km/3 mi north of Munising. The island is a mostly wooded game refuge. |
Grand Island| Town and administrative headquarters of Hall County, south-central Nebraska; population (2000) 42,900. It is located 144 km/90 mi west-northwest of Lincoln. Established on the banks of the Platte River in the 1850s, it was moved slightly north when the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1866. Still a railway hub, it has packing houses, flour mills, and dairies, and ships livestock, meat, and fruit as well as farm, dairy, and poultry products. Manufactures include farm machinery and appliances. It has been a mule trading centre since the 19th century; horses and cattle are also traded here. |
Grand Island| Island in the upper Niagara River, in Erie County, New York; it is 12 km/7.5 mi long and 1.5–10.5 km/1–6.5 mi wide. The island lies immediately northwest of Buffalo. The suburban town of Grand Island includes this and several other small islands; population (1990) 17,600. The island of Grand Island is linked by bridges to Ontario and New York. Buckhorn State Park is on its northern shore and on neighbouring Buckhorn Island. Beaver Island State Park is on its south shore and on neighbouring Beaver Island. |
