Grand Isle

Grand Isle

Island town in Jefferson Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (1990) 1,500; it is 11 km/7 mi in length from northeast–southwest and up to 2 km/1.5 mi wide. Grand Isle is situated to the south of Barataria and Caminada bays, 80 km/50 mi south of New Orleans. The island is wooded and has a noted beach. Its inhabitants fish and maintain truck farms, and tourism is also important to the local economy. In the early 19th century it was a headquarters of the pirate Jean Lafitte's smuggling operations.
