Grand Manan Island

Island off the southwest coast of New Brunswick, Canada; area 155 sq km/60 sq mi; population (1991) 2,600. Grand Manan Island is the largest of the Fundy Isles, which also include Deer and Campobello islands. It is 37 km/23 mi south-southeast of St Andrews and 19 km/12 mi southeast of Eastport, Maine. The island is situated at the entrance to the Bay of Fundy, south of Passamaquoddy Bay, and is separated from the Maine coast by the 13 km/8 mi-wide Grand Manan Channel. North Head is the chief community on the island; population (1991) 700. Fishing and dulse (seaweed) harvesting are the main industries. The island is an artists' and writers' retreat, noted for its cliffs and its variety of migratory birds.

Settled in the 1780s by Loyalists (those who remained loyal to Britain during the American Revolution), after having been a French possession, it was the focus of a US–Canadian territorial dispute until it became part of New Brunswick in 1817.
