Grand Strand

Resort area of the northeast South Carolina shore, in Horry and Georgetown counties. It extends approximately 100 km/60 mi along the Atlantic Ocean from the North Carolina border to Georgetown on Winyah Bay. Its focal point is Myrtle Beach. Bathing and fishing in Gulf Stream waters, golf, and a variety of amusement parks are major attractions. Brookgreen Gardens, a sculpture garden, is on the grounds of a former rice plantation 5 km/3 mi south of Murrells Inlet. Pawleys Island, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Georgetown, is known for its handmade hammocks. The Grand Strand is a growing retirement area, and is especially popular with Canadian vacationers.

Other communities in the region include North Myrtle Beach, Little River, Garden City, and Murrells Inlet. Litchfield Beach, Surfside Beach, and Atlantic Beach are among the area's smaller resorts.
