grand unified theory

In physics, sought-for theory that would combine the theory of the strong nuclear force (called quantum chromodynamics) with the theory of the weak nuclear and electromagnetic forces (see forces, fundamental). The search for the grand unified theory is part of a larger programme seeking a unified field theory, or ‘theory of everything’, which would combine all the forces of nature (including gravity) within one framework.
