Grande Illusion, La

Grande Illusion, La

Film made in France in 1937, written and directed by Jean Renoir, recounting the experiences of a group of French prisoners during World War I. Ostensibly an antiwar statement, the film wittily points out the class divisions and hypocrisies within society; there is a bond of mutual understanding between the aristocratic prisoner and the high-born German commandant (Erich von Stroheim).
