Grande Prairie

Town in northwest Alberta, Canada; population (1996 est) 31,100. It is situated on the Bear River, near the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve, 377 km/234 mi northwest of Edmonton. A commercial and transportation centre for the Peace River region, it has an economy based on agriculture, forestry, petroleum, and tourism.

Grande Prairie was originally settled as a Hudson's Bay Company post in the 1880s, and began to attract farmers from around 1910. Growth followed the arrival of the railway in 1916, and the town became a wheat trade centre. Grande Prairie Regional College is in the town and Saskatoon Island Provincial Park is to the west. The Grande Prairie museum is located in Muskoseepi Park, which runs along the Bear River.

Much work has been done in Grande Prairie for the conservation of the North American trumpeter swan, which was brought back from the verge of extinction.
