Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, La

Operetta by Jacques Offenbach (libretto by H Meilhac and L Halévy), first produced at the Théâtre des Variétés, Paris, France, on 12 April 1867. It describes how the grand duchess has an eye for the recruit Fritz, promoting him eventually to the rank of general. When he still prefers to marry the peasant Wanda, she turns against him. After complications, there is a happy ending.
