Grangemouth

Seaport and former burgh in Falkirk unitary authority, Scotland, about 4 km/2.5 mi northeast of Falkirk; population (2001) 17,800. Its main industries are oil-related. The refineries are fed by overland pipelines from Loch Finnart and the North Sea fields. Scandinavian timber is a major import.

The town's initial growth was due to the construction of the Forth and Clyde Canal, completed in 1791 but now closed to navigation. Dock improvements in 1843 allowed the settlement to expand. Its industries were mainly maritime-related, but with some brickmaking and coalmining. In 1897 the development of a soap factory initiated a connection with the chemical sector. The first oil refinery was established here in 1924.
