Granger, Clive (1934- )| British economist and academic. Granger shared with US economist Robert Engle the 2003 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for their discoveries in the analysis of time series data. In particular, he received the award for methods of analysing economic time series with common trends (co-integration). Granger's examination of the relationship between key economic variables such as prices and the exchange rate, or wealth and consumption, helped to explain long-term trends, by reducing the effect of statistical fluctuations. This discovery led to significant breakthroughs in statistics and macroeconomic forecasting. |
| Granger joined the faculty at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), where he collaborated with Engle, in 1974, and retired in 2003. He is professor emeritus at UCSD. |
| Granger was born in Swansea, Wales, UK. In 1956, he became a lecturer in statistics in the Mathematics Department at Nottingham University, England, where he obtained a PhD in statistics in 1959. Granger is also President of the Western Economic Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association. |
