Granite City

Granite City

City in Madison County, southwest Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St Louis, Missouri; population (1990) 32,800. An industrial city with its own port on the Chain of Rocks Canal, it manufactures steel products, car frames, chemicals, and building materials.

It was founded in 1891 when a graniteware factory was built here, and was incorporated in 1896.
