Granma

Province of southeast Cuba, bounded on the north by Las Tunas province and Holguín, and on the east by Santiago de Cuba province; area 8,362 sq km/3,229 sq mi; population (1994 est) 818,000. The Sierra Maestra mountains in the south of the province include the Pico Turquino, Cuba's highest point (height 1,974 m/6,476 ft). The area is largely agricultural, growing about a third of Cuba's rice crop, especially around Bayamo and the port of Manzanillo. Other agricultural products include tobacco, coffee and cotton, while industries include the mining of manganese and copper and the manufacture of shoes, cigars, textiles, and refined sugar. The principal town is Bayamon.
