Grant, Julia (1826–1902)

US first lady, much admired by the public for her style while in the White House. She married the future US president Ulysses S Grant in 1848, and throughout their marriage helped him cope with his bouts of depression and hard drinking. She later wrote an autobiography, which was not published until 1975. She was born Julia Boggs Dent in St Louis, Missouri.
