Rice, Grantland (1880–1954)

US sports journalist. Gaining a reputation for vivid sports writing, he worked for the New York Herald Tribune 1914–30. After 1930 he wrote the column ‘The Sportlight’, setting the standard for modern sports journalism. He succeeded Walter Camp in selecting the annual All-America football team.

Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA, and educated at Vanderbilt University, Rice joined the staff of the Nashville News 1901 and was hired by the New York Mail 1911. His autobiography, The Tumult and the Shouting, was published 1954.
