Grants

Town in Cibola County, west-central New Mexico; population (2000) 8,800. It is situated on the San Jose River, 105 km/65 mi west of Albuquerque. Founded as a Santa Fe Railroad town, it was a livestock and agricultural trade centre. With the discovery of uranium in the area in 1950, the city became a mining centre for several decades. New Mexico State University has a branch (1968) here.

Nearby, to the west and northeast, are sections of the Cibola National Forest. The Ácoma and Laguna American Indian reservations are to the southeast and the east respectively. El Malpais national monument is to the south and El Morro national monument is to the southwest.
