Grants Pass

Town and administrative headquarters of Josephine County, southwest Oregon; population (2000) 23,000. It is situated on the Rogue River, in the Klamath Mountains, 39 km/24 mi west-northwest of Medford. The town's economy is based on the manufacture of plywood and wood products and the shipment of locally produced horticultural bulbs. Also important is the processing of the area's fruit, dairy products, and metals.

Originally a stop on the stagecoach route to California, the town grew into an important regional trading centre after the arrival of the railway in 1883. Grants Pass serves as gateway to the Siskiyou National Forest, Rogue River National Forest, and Oregon Caves National Monument, which are 40 km/25 mi to the south.
