Grass Valley

Town in Nevada County, northeast California; population (1990) 9,000. It is situated on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada, 80 km/50 mi northeast of Sacramento and 6 km/4 mi southwest of Nevada City. Tourism, fruit growing, and some light manufactures are the principal economic activities in the town.

Historically, Grass Valley was the centre of a goldmining area that was operative from 1850 through to the 1950s. It is now known for its Empire Mine State Historic Park, the home of the Irish actor and dancer Lola Montez, which survived an 1855 fire that levelled most of the town, and other sites associated with the gold period.
