Grateful Dead, the

US psychedelic rock group formed in 1965. Their shows featured long improvisations and subtle ensemble playing, seldom fully captured in recording; albums include Live Dead (1969), Workingman's Dead (1970), and Built to Last (1989). They continued to tour until the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995.

Formed at the heart of the San Francisco hippie scene, the Dead represented an alternative life style to a core of fans (Deadheads) who followed the constantly touring band around the world. Founder members were Jerry Garcia (1942–1995), guitar; Phil Lesh (1940– ), bass; Bob Weir (1947– ), guitar; and Bill Kreutzmann (1946– ), drums. Out of their vast repertoire of original and nonoriginal material, they are especially identified with the song ‘Truckin'’ (from American Beauty 1970).
