Gravenhurst

Town in Muskoka District Municipality, south-central Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 10,000. It is situated on the southern end of Lake Muskoka, 140 km/87 mi north of Toronto. In the late 19th century it was the site of steamboat departures into the scenic Muskoka Lakes, and has remained a popular tourist destination. The 1890 birthplace of the Canadian doctor and political activist Norman Bethune is preserved.
