Graves, Michael

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Graves, Michael (1934– )

US architect. His work, in the postmodernist idiom, is distinctive for the refined, elegant manner in which it blends classical and vernacular elements. Originally a member of the New York Five group, with Peter Eisenman and Richard Meier, Graves went on to develop a highly idiosyncratic, colourful style, as represented in the Public Services building, Portland, Oregon, 1980–82, and Humana Tower, Louisville, Kentucky, 1986. In 2001 he was awarded the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal.

He has also designed consumer goods and has had a successful line at the Target chain in the USA.
