Graves's disease

Disorder involving the thyroid gland, in which abnormal antibodies are produced that stimulate the gland to release excessive amounts of thyroxine, leading to a speeding up of the body's metabolic rate. Its effects include heat intolerance, weight loss, sweating, abnormal heart rhythms, brisk reflexes, and bulging, staring eyes. It is an autoimmune disease.
