Gray, Hanna

Gray, Hanna (1930– )

US educator. The first woman provost at Yale University (1974–77), she also became the first woman to head a major research university when she served as president of the University of Chicago (1978–93). During her administration she both cut costs and increased undergraduate and minority enrolments. Gray was born Hanna Holborn in Heidelberg, Germany, and emigrated to the USA in 1934. She received her doctorate in Renaissance history from Harvard University in 1957. A professor at Northwestern University (1960–72), she became dean of arts and sciences there (1972–74). She returned to teaching at the University of Chicago in 1993.
