Great Barrington

Great Barrington

Town in Berkshire County, southwest Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 7,600. It is situated on the Housatonic and Williams rivers, 29 km/18 mi south-southwest of Pittsfield. Tourism is the principal industry for this commercial centre of a year-round resort area, though it also has some light manufacturing, dairying, and poultry farming.

Great Barrington was the birthplace of African-American writer W E B Du Bois. Simon's Rock College (1964) is in the town.
