Great Bend

Town and administrative headquarters of Barton County, central Kansas; population (2000) 15,300. It is a shipping centre for oil and wheat. It is home to the Barton County Community College (1965).

Deriving its name from its location on a sweeping curve of the Arkansas River, Great Bend was established in 1871 close to the site of the abandoned Fort Zarah, on the Santa Fe Trail. The following year it became a boisterous cow town after the railway's arrival. Pawnee Rock, the Cheyenne Bottoms marsh, a major migratory waterfowl stop, and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge are all nearby.
