Bitter Lakes

Two lakes, the Great Bitter Lake and the Small Bitter Lake, which form part of the Suez Canal, originally in the bed of the Red Sea. These lakes were 8–12 m/26–39 ft below sea level, but were almost dry when the canal was cut.

During the 1967 Arab–Israeli War many ships were trapped in the lakes and left to rust. They were dredged in 1975 by the British navy in order to allow the canal to open later that year.
