Great Expectations

Novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1861. Philip Pirrip (‘Pip’), brought up by his sister and her husband, the blacksmith Joe Gargery, rejects his humble background and pursues wealth, which he believes comes from the elderly, eccentric Miss Havisham. Ultimately, through adversity, he recognizes the value of his origins.
