Great Falls

City in north-central Montana, USA, on the Missouri River, 116 km/72 mi northeast of Helena; seat of Cascade County; population (2000) 56,700. Its main industries are the processing of copper and zinc from nearby mines; the processing of agricultural products and oil-refining is also important. It is the second-largest city of the state, after Billings. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were the first Europeans to discover the waterfalls, in 1805; the Lewis and Clark National Forest is nearby.

The community was laid out in 1882 and incorporated as a city in 1888. The city lies about 16 km/10 mi from the Great Falls of the Missouri, from which it derives its name; the river drops 111 m/364 ft here in the space of 13 km/8 mi and powers a large hydroelectric plant (built in 1891).

Between five and six next morning, we arrived at Buffalo, where we breakfasted; and being too near the Great Falls to wait patiently anywhere else, we set off by the train, the same morning at nine o'clock, to Niagara.
