great northern diver

Species of diver Gavia immer, order Gaviiformes. The head, neck, and upper tail-coverts are glossed with deep purplish green on a black background; there is a short transverse bar on the throat collar or middle of the neck; the upper plumage is black, marked with white spots, and the under plumage white. The total length is 70 cm/28 in.

Wherever you go on the island, you are never far from a loch or from bird life - herring gulls, terns, oyster-catchers, shelducks and the Great Northern Diver in full breeding plumage before it departs at the end of May.
Great northern divers were off Rhos-on-Sea, Point Lynas, Penmon and Point of Ayr, with red-throated diver and a long-tailed duck off Penrhyn Bay.
