Sochi

Town in the Krasnodar krai (territory) of the southwestern Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 356,000. Sochi is located 175 km/109 mi southeast of Krasnodar on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, at the foot of the main Caucasian mountain range. Its favourable location (incorporating sea bathing and sulphur springs) and its subtropical climate have made it a popular health resort. Sochi has expanded along the Black Sea coast for a distance of nearly 40 km/25 mi.

Sochi lies just north of the Russian border with Georgia. The city was founded in 1896, and began to develop as a major spa and holiday resort from the 1930s onwards. In 1976 Sochi became the world's first ‘no smoking’ city.
