Great Train Robbery, The

US silent film released in 1903, directed by Edwin S Porter. It was a sophisticated 12-minute narrative broken up into separate scenes, which utilized editing techniques to advance the story. Although not the first screen Western, its depiction of a railroad hold-up and the escape and subsequent capture of the thieves set the tone for the American Western genre.
