Great Whale River

River in northwest Québec, Canada; length 590 km/365 mi. It flows west from Lake Bienville, reaching Hudson Bay at Kuujjuarapik. In the 1990s the Great Whale River was the focus of intense controversy over the James Bay power development project, which the Cree and environmental groups opposed as destructive of wildlife, ecological balance, and the native way of life.
