Greek Archipelago

    0.02 sec.

Greek Archipelago

Collective name for those islands in the Aegean Sea belonging to Greece. They comprise four groups: the Cyclades; the Cretan arc, including Crete; the East Aegean Islands, including Rhodes, Samos, Khios, Lesvos, Lemnos, the Dodecanese Islands and the Sporades; Euboea.

The Cyclades are of volcanic origin and possess a considerable variety of minerals. Agriculture is practised mainly on the coastal lowlands, and they support dense populations in spite of much emigration. Crete, the largest Aegean island, has cultivated foothills and a harbourless south coast. The East Aegean Islands were formerly part of Asia Minor (Turkey). They are intensely cultivated. Rhodes is formed of infertile gravels and limestone mountains. Euboea, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel, is mountainous, with fertile foothills and intensive cultivation.
