Opera by Bohuslav Martinů (libretto by composer from the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis), composed 1955–58 in Nice, New York, Pratteln, and Rome. It was first produced in Zurich, Switzerland, on 9 June 1961, conducted by Paul Sacher. In the story, the villagers of Lyeovrissi prepare for their annual Passion play. Manolios, who is to play Christ, fights for some local refugees, but is killed by Panais, who was to play Judas.
