greenback

Paper money issued by the US government 1862–65 to help finance the Civil War. It was legal tender but could not be converted into gold. Greenback is also a popular term for the US dollar (dollar bills are green).

The Greenback Labor Party was a US political organization which campaigned in the late 1870s for currency inflation by increasing the paper dollars in circulation.
