beryl

Mineral that forms crystals chiefly in granite. It is the chief ore of beryllium. Two of its gem forms are aquamarine (light-blue crystals) and emerald (dark-green crystals).

Well-formed crystals of up to 200 tons have been found.

There is debate over the difference between emerald and green beryl (see Conklin, 2002, and Schwarz and Schmetzer, 2002).
are the most common, followed by green beryl crystals (or emeralds), with minor clear, white and yellow beryl crystals also being found.
Egypt was probably the only source of emerald and other green beryl for the ancient civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean region.
