Greene, Hugh Carleton

Greene, Hugh Carleton (1910–1987)

English journalist and administrator. He was director of administration for the BBC (1956–58), director of news and current affairs (1958–59), and director general (1960–69).

Educated at Berkhamsted School and Merton College, Oxford, he worked for many years on the Daily Telegraph, covering many foreign assignments. In 1940 he joined the BBC as head of the German service.

He was the brother of the novelist Graham Greene. He was awarded the OBE in 1950 and knighted in 1964.
